Let me start this post by saying: I will not be able to capture the beauty of this film through my blog. The magnitude of the aesthetics can only be enjoyed on film as it was intended. That being said, I highly recommend this film to all lovers of beauty, fashion and art. The direction of the film is done by the famous Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation and the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola). It stars Kirsten Dunst in the title role and Jason Schwartzman as Louis XVI.
Marie Antoinette isn't a historical retelling of her life, it is highly stylized and impressionistic. It capturers how much of a rock star she was while showering the eyes of its viewers with beauty.
The costume and makeup artistry won an Academy award and was featured on the cover and in the pages of Vogue with an accompanying photo shoot. This is by far my favourite issue of the magazine.
Several designers were featured like Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, Alexander Mcqueen, Oliver Theyskens, Dior and Balenciaga.
Costume work by Milena Canonero. An interview with The London Times "At the start of pre-production, Coppola handed Canonero a box of pastel-coloured macaroons from the Laduree pastry house. "She told me, 'These are the colours I love'," recalls Canonero. "I used them as a palette. Sofia was clear about the colouration, but left the rest to me. We squeezed the essence of the period, without reproducing it. Even if you think you know a lot about it," she argues, "you always have to look for a new angle. I simplified the very heavy look of the 18th century. I wanted it to be believable, but more stylized."
If you are a true lover of art I imagine you have already seen this movie.
